My favorite in Green Bay. Yes, Hinterland and Republic Chop House are very good too. I still would put B & T just a small step ahead. Only because I have never had a bad meal or sub par service when I have eaten there. I love their Salmon and have drooled over the Black & Tan. Literally melts in your mouth!

Excellent service and food was wonderful. Highly recommend the Black & Tan steak. Nice wine options too.

We dined here with our friend d prior to seeing a concert at the Meyer Theater. It's location downtown is quaint. They have a nice bar/wine selection. The food we had was very good. Surf and turf, steaks, bread service, and desserts. It was well worth the drive to Green Bay to dine here. Here is something for everyone on the ever changing menu.

Overpaid and Under fed. We went to brunch at B&T and it was not worth the trip or the money. We paid like $16 for biscuits and gravy without any sides. You had to pay more for sides. The Bloody Mary tasted like it was just poured out of a bottle. Really, any other brunch in GB would be better than this.

From: Carolyn R. -- New Berlin, WI On January 3rd, 2015 my husband & I had an exquisite dinner at Black & Tan Grille for a belated 25th Anniversary celebration. It was the BEST dinner we ever had! Plus the service was flawless, just like another Yelper mentioned. For our hors d'oeuvres we tried the Tenderloin Brie purses, the Mahi Mahi, and the Calamari. All 3 were absolutely gorgeous! If we had to pick a favorite, it'd be the Tenderloin Brie Purses, which were out of this world! For the main course we had the Black & Tan Beef Tenderloin and the Grilled Ribeye, and they were both done to perfection. The desserts looked heavenly, but we decided to take a pass as we were so full already. The whole dining experience at Black & Tan Grille was perfect and we will most definitely be back!

Great place. The service was spectacular the food was for the most part impeccable. I think that the decor needs quite a bit of updating. It really does not fit the menu. But I had the duck.A perfect medium with a goose liver mousse on the side. I did not care for the roasted turnip garnish. Lobster bisque was the best that i have ever had. The waitress was so incredibly polished but very at ease. Great experience and great food.

I love love love this place. A nice restaurant that has veered away from the "supper club" vibe that Green Bay is sadly known for! This restaurant knows how to make their patrons feel special. I am quite rehearsed at restaurant food, and how a menu should be. The change of the menu is great. The "locals" here love the prime rib (which I love too), so to respect the locals, they keep that. I agree with that move. But each season, or around that schedule, they change their menu, which is a delight. Thank you for bringing/keeping such a pleasant surprise to Green Bay.

New Years Eve Epic Fail. We hadn't been to the Black and Tan since they were in De Pere. It's not worth an evening out. First The waiter brought out a more expensive bottle of wine than we ordered. Three of four in our party ordered the signature steak but with different levels of doneness. When the steaks came out they were all medium rare so two of us sent them back. When they came back out they were both medium so one had to go back as it was supposed to be medium well. Thirty minutes later a little charred briquette came out for my friend and she finally gave up trying to get a steak medium well. If you can't cook a steak as it's ordered then steak should not be your signature dish. The final blow was a piece of plastic in my husband's cheesecake. They did comp the desserts and offered free drink tickets but when you are dropping three bills on dinner it's hardly incentive to try again.

I've only been here once for dinner and I rather enjoyed the experience. My appetizer was delicious and the Black & Tan entree was wonderfully grilled. I recommend getting it with the mushrooms. It was busy due to it being a Saturday night and the Meyer Theatre right up the street had a show. The dining area didn't seem loud...

The service was great for the first part of our meal. The bread was tasty. We didn't order an appetizer. When our food finally came, the waitress asked if my husband wanted another beer, and he replied that he did. We were almost done with our entree, and he still didn't have his beer, so we had to get the attention of another waiter to cancel the beer. (She ended up charging us for the third beer, so we had to wait 10 minutes to get that corrected =/ ) The entree was very salty. I had the chicken, and my husband had the pork. He brought the little bit he didn't eat home, and my son had a bite, and agreed that it was salty as well. The ambiance was very welcoming. It's set in an historic building. I just wish the quality and the price of food went together, because I don't mind paying for dinner, but at least have the service and the food reflect the price. Black and Tan did not do that. We'd not visited the Black and Tan since they were in De Pere, but we figured we'd try it again. We won't be back.

Great service, great food, great atmosphere. I have no complaints and would definitely consider dining again to celebrate any special occasion. Our server, Amy C, was great and really knew the menu items. I will definitely recommend to friends and family!

I ate here to nights in a row. The service is great. The appetizers were good both nights. It was very dark, but quiet to talk at the table. The first night I had the rib-eye steak and it was very good, the second night I had the scallops with bacon and the side was tortellini. The scallops tasted burnt from the bacon and the tortellini was very dry. This dish may be a favorite for others but I will never order it again. I would go back as the building have lots of history and it was a very nice bar. The staff is very on top of your table and you never go with out.

We had a very good dinner. The service was definitely 5-stars, and the room is beautiful. We started with drinks which were generous and served perfectly. Our appetizer was the Lobster Mac and Cheese. It tasted delicious, but was marred by being unevenly reheated. Some of it was lukewarm or cold, other parts were just right, like it had been microwaved. It also needed salt. It would have been better if it had been reheated properly. The signature Black and Tan fillet mignon was delicious and lived up to it's reputation and came medium rare, as ordered. The duck, which was ordered medium-rare, came out closer to medium-well. It was still quite tender and the flavor was excellent, and the sauce was a wonderful accompaniment. The fingerling potatoes were the star of the plate. Crisp on the outside, waxy and delicious on the inside. For dessert we had the chocolate cake with banana crème icing. It was tasty, but without intense flavor. The chocolate flavor was OK, and the banana icing a very nice part of the cake. Unfortunately, it was refrigerated and still had a chill to it when it was served, which changed the texture of both the cake and icing. I really like this restaurant and would visit it again, but it isn't inexpensive and should have been better on the details in order to earn five stars.

Delicious meals and fantastic service. Breads are amazing. Given the opportunity, I would highly recommend this place as being one of the top two places to eat in Green Bay. The view for the tables are nice and the service is excellent. There is yet a meal there that my wife and I haven't enjoyed. Whether it is the seafood or their signature steak, it was all cooked well and properly seasoned. For the breads, I personally like the olive loaf myself, but they were all delicious.

Food is good but be prepared to wait. This is a dining experience with a good wait between courses. My husband and I ordered appetizer, salad, entree, and dessert and we were there for 2 hours. Ahi Tuna is great. Lobster bisque very tasty. Beef tenderloin was above average. Lobster claws were over cooked

The bar area was pretty empty on Wed. Night, which can suck when you're flying solo, but the bartender was just the right amount of friendly/ let me be. The Black & Tan fillet... Outstanding. Presentation which was a bit ostentatious had me worried considering we're talking Green Bay, but the perfectly seared flesh was just the right amount of savory when mixed with the bed of sauces it lay in. Bread service was tasty to boot, and over-all I left better for the experience. What more could you ask (especially for a town where cheese curds & walleye are considered delicacies!)?

The Black and Tan Grille has been a favorite of mine for quite a while, dating back to their residency in West DePere. Presently, it is located in the Bellin Building with a bar/lounge on the first floor, and main dining area on the second. In the lounge, one can enjoy appetizers and sampler portions of menu items, along with beer, cocktails, and wine. The menu offers a limited number of appetizers, but I've enjoyed each of them, my personal favorite being the Tenderloin Brie purses (Steak and brie wrapped in puff pastry, baked, and served with a mustard-cream sauce). While the menu changes every few months to reflect the seasons, you can generally expect a few steaks (Including the restaurant's signature Black & Tan steak), and a dish featuring chicken, duck, lamb, pork, or various seafood options. Each entree comes with homemade bread (Don't ignore the bread; I recommend the onion-walnut), and your choice of soup or salad (There are typically a few options each night, and the soups and dressings are made in-house and delicious). Dessert mostly consists of steakhouse favorites like giant slices of carrot/red-velvet cakes, or various flavors of cheesecake. These have been delicious in my experience, but I believe they may have hired a new pastry chef as I've enjoyed excellent creme brulee and bread pudding on my recent visits, which I believe is new to the menu. My only complaint with the restaurant is that they sometimes seem to offer dishes which sound innovative, but are conceptually silly, or failed executions. Examples of this are their recent offering of Chilean seabass rubbed with beet powder, or tuna rubbed with horseradish powder. I found both of these preparations with powder to be uninspired. Also, the chef of Black and Tan Grille seems to like pairing protein with Asian-influenced dishes based on homemade noodles. I may have gone on "off" nights, but these components have always seemed to be a failure to me (Wads of dry, yet sticky, overcooked noodles with finely chopped vegetables reminiscent of cheap frozen stir-fry mix). While I've offered a lot of criticism to Black and Tan Grille, the primary reason I offer it is because I think it's a fantastic restaurant, and recommend it to everyone I know. There are occasional mis-steps in the menu, but I think the restaurant's ambition and value more than overcome this. If you're looking for an upscale meal, great service, and value, Black and Tan Grille is hard to beat.

My Husband and I went on V-Day. What a class act, we sat down stairs and had a drink until it was time to go upstairs for dinner, on the way, I was handed a rose by the hostess who was taking us to our table. This place is top notch all the way, while you're done with the menus and having your drink, they come around with a big basket of bread and you can pick from 4 different varieties, that are used to dip into a plate of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, with parmesan cheese that she has put together on the table, it was just wonderful. Our entrees were cooked to perfection, and the presentation was just top notch. We didn't get desert, but what I saw going by the table looked wonderful. This isn't a place where you can go out to eat every night, unless you are in the top ten percent, for us it was a treat and we really enjoyed it. This place is a great way to go out for a great dinner and a good bottle of wine, but be sure you bring the Master Card.

Prior to Green Bay Restaurant Week I had only been to Black & Tan for drinks in the downstairs lounge. The lounge is relatively inviting and relaxed. It's a perfect spot for a drink or two. As part of Restaurant Week there was a really fantastic lunch menu that I'm so glad I took advantage of. I had the Grilled Asparagus and Crab Salad and I sampled the turkey pita, along with a soup and pasta salad. Everything was delicious and fresh. The crab was fresh and perfectly salty. Even if I weren't getting all of this at Restaurant Week prices I would definitely recommend it. The only negative was the waitress. I arrived for a later lunch and she seemed to be the only waitress. And although they weren't horribly busy, service was slow. I was not in a rush so it got to the point where it was funny. She was very friendly, but too aloof to remember refills. Other than that I would definitely recommend Black & Tan. I'm excited to try their dinner menu soon.

We decided on going to Black & Tan Grille over Hinterland for our Valentines dinner because they were open on Sundays, the only day we could go. They made our evening one to remember and we will definitely be back for more. Black & Tan consists of two sections, a lively lounge downstairs and an elegant restaurant upstairs. Jason, our server, approached us and broke down the entire menu without even looking at it. The guy knows his stuff about food and wine, I was impressed. Your meal starts off with four delicious complementary house-made breads: French, Onion Walnut, Green & Black Olive, and Roasted Red Pepper with Asiago. We both opted for the salads over the soup du jour for our starters that come with the entrees, Natalie went with Parmesan Peppercorn Ranch and I chose the Mango-Raspberry Vinaigrette. Words cannot describe how tasty the homemade dressings were! Natalie ordered the Steak Au Poivre, featuring a pepper encrusted sirloin topped with melted espresso BellaVitano cheese over fingerling potatoes and a natural jus demi. Whenever we go out to eat, we try each others entree before we try our own. I was quite jealous of her when I took that first bite of her steak! The pepper encrusted around the steak was right up my alley and it provided a nice kick. The pan seared Mapleleaf duck I ordered quickly erased my jealousy though and I enjoyed every last bite that was on my plate, even the cabbage, carrot, and ginger dumpling and the red chili broth. The carrot cake we had for dessert was good, but nothing to rave about. If you are looking for a nice romantic dinner, Black & Tan Grille is an excellent place to consider. The food is excellent and the service is top-notch. We have never received better service than Jason provided us that evening. Kudos to him and Black & Tan for making our Valentines dinner special.

Mediocre food and service. Poor quality meat, food barely warm, bland sauces. I would not recommend it or return.

Blown away (meant to be said very slowly and with a serious face)!! What the feck, who is punking me?! Another top notch restaurant in GB. Service is more then 5 stars and the food is double that. We came in just for a drink one night. The first floor is this elegant bar/ lounge are, very classy and smooth. The second floor is the actual restaurant of which I didn't see. We were so taken back by the level of service from Jason (bartender/ waiter) and not to mention that the menu looked pretty appetizing, that we decided to come back the next night for dinner. You can order from the upstairs menu instead of the bar menu which is a big plus. When we came back we decided to stay downstairs again. Of course Jason remembered us right away. Again such excellent service, it wasn't busy but busy enough for one guy to run around (not that he was actually running). We chatted a little about the area and the restaurant. When we got on the topic of the food, he said that the head chef was 26. I was really impressed and maybe a little jealous. This kid has skillz! You start off with a trio of homemade bread, French Onion Walnut, Olive, Roasted Garlic Pesto... So good I was almost making love to them. We went for the Calamari next, it was good but nothing like really wow. Then I had the Sun Dried Tomato Chicken -Roasted Garlic and sun dried tomato bone in chicken breast over a lemon scented orzo and spinach basil ricotta puree garnished with crisped artichokes. Words cannot describe, the puree alone... feck me. My date went with the Tuna special -I don't remember what was in it but again, feck me this is good! Already stuffed and couldn't eat another bite when Jason tells us that the owner or owners mother (something like that) makes all of the cakes by herself. So we had to try out the carrot cake. Listen I'm not a fan of carrot cake at all but I'm a fan of this one. Listen, forget the Packers just come to Green Bay for the food and fun.

Yet another amazing meal at Black and Tan-from the delicious bread service (walnut onion, red pepper asiago pesto) to the tasty pumpkin bisque on special tonight, the mouth-watering entrees (the Black and Tan tenderloin for my mother-in-law, my perfectly done duck breast with roasted turnips and brussel sprouts, my husband's goat cheese-sun dried tomato-spinach stuffed chicken roulade), perfect wine pairing (Relative by Gott vineyards)...from start to finish-amazing!!! I just wish I could get the recipe for the walnut-chocolate-caramel torte! It is simply divine!!!

Black and Tan has been our "go to" celebration restaurant for many years. Since they have moved downtown, the lounge is as congenial as the restaurant. We love to go there and order cocktails and small plates, especially when we are attending a show at the Meyer across the street.

We were satisfied with the food but the service was terrible! We waited far too long to even be seated even though we had a reservation. Once seated, we waited again far too long to get a drink ordered. The waitress poured oil for bread but we didn't get the bread for 10 min. When we inquired, she said that she was waiting for the fresh bread to come out of the oven but the bread she brought us was clearly not fresh or hot. She appeared annoyed with us when we inquired. After my husband got his salad he asked for extra dressing which she never brought. My husband ordered a wine flight that was paired with each course. The waitress didn't bring the wine with the course though, sometimes not until he was finished with the course. I asked for a box for my leftovers. She took my leftovers but never brought them to me. We didn't think of it until we got in the car. This was a Wednesday evening and was not busy. Overall, the service was extremely slow. I would not return for this reason even though we did enjoy the food.

We really anticipated an evening of fine dining and got mediocre high priced food instead. It was a cold , rainy night but people still have to eat. The upstairs dining room had 2 other people in it. It was cold and very dark, almost spooky. The servers were in no hurry. Okay, the bread was tasty but we were only offered one slice each. The salads came out after a long pause. My raspberry vinaigrette was tasty. My husband's apple cider dressing, however was scarce and tasteless. My entree was Pan seared salmon next to a spinach and artichoke risotto crowned by an olive tapenade and finished with a chive crème fraiche --$28.. The salmon was done perfectly but was totally overpowered by the overly abundant tapenade. I scrapped off most of the olives and ate the salmon with the fraiche which was delicious. The risotto was not only cold but very dry. My husband chose the brown sugar roasted pork tenderloin with beer braised Brussels sprouts, bacon and sweet potato hashed on a plate painted in a cranberry pepper reduction--$28. The pork was very tender and moist. As for the hash, the two brussel sprout halves were the size of a tennis ball and very bitter. The sweet potatoes were tasty but somewhat under cooked on one side, over cooked on the other. Yes, it was our anniversary. No, we were not offered a free desert. No big deal. Our opinion is that the food was nothing special and was over-priced by atleast $10. As far as the ambiance, it isn't much and as my Dad always said "You can't eat the tablecloth!" Will we go back? No. There are better places in Green Bay.

Not too bad. We each ordered the ribeye. It was a bit bland, but good nevertheless. The ribeye comes covered with batter fried onions. I asked the waitress to leave the onions off, but I received them anyways. This is not the kind of service I expect when ordering a $35 steak. I can take the onions off myself at McDonalds, but not at a steakhouse.

Unfortunately I was extremely underwhelmed with Black and Tan grill. Myself, my Fiancé, and another couple visited the restaurant for my birthday meal and were disappointed in all aspects of the restaurant. The food was ok (not great by and means) and quite pricey ($40 for their signature Angus tenderloin). My tenderloin was perfectly grilled, but had little to no flavor. The red wine reduction that accompanied it was also lacking in flavor. The bruschetta that the tenderloin was atop was soggy and slightly unappetizing with the extreme gorgonzola flavor (I love blue cheese but it simply had too much applied to it to enjoy). Worst of all the food seemed a bit cold. Normally this wouldn't be a deal breaker (being served slightly above room temperature) but the pace of the meal was extremely slow and I kept asking myself "why deliberately slow down the meal but cook my food at normal pace and bring it to me cold". The other meals around the table were of similar temperatures and though I didn't try them all, the ones that I did sample (the Duck that my Fiancé had and the Tuna the other woman had) were both underwhelming in flavor. The ambiance in the restaurant is slightly off-putting as well. The downstairs lounge was very pleasant with large lounge chairs and an upscale bar filed with the after work crowd (Friday evening happy hour) but the upstairs dining room was not as inviting. The tables are situated around the outer rim of the building allowing for a view of downtown Green Bay from every table, but caused for a somewhat isolated and cold feeling to the restaurant. It's slightly difficult to describe, but none the less, it just wasn't comfortable. The only true plus that I can say is that for our visit (6PM on a Friday) our cocktails fell in happy hour pricing and my Fiancé was able to order a Bombay Sapphire/Grey Goose Martini (large in size and very tasty) for $6. Overall I would say stay away from Black and Tan when you have Hinterland right down the road that hands down beats every aspect of this restaurant.

Was recently there for GB Restaurant Week - so it was hugely busy. Yet our server could not have been better, and the food was amazing. The seared ahi tuna appetizer should not be missed, it's delectable. If you are looking for a delicious meal with great service and a relaxing atmosphere, this is it.

Another seriously over rated $30-40 entree Green Bay restaurant. If I went to an equivalent restaurant in DC, service would be quicker and the food would be extravagant. Here, I ordered a side salad with my Black & Tan beef tenderloin. The salad was nothing more than lettuce leaves...that's it. The bread service looked fancy but the bread was not very good. The tenderloin saved the meal...it was cooked to perfection and tasted very good! Strange thing is that they served the mashed potatoes on a side plate. Probably would not return at these prices for the value of service.

Green Bay has a a good one in Black and Tan. I'm not sure why they named this restaurant Black and Tan. Why not Green and Gold? Anyway, I had dinner at this place with a bunch of friends. We had a spacious private room on the second floor. It could have held probably 50. Unlike my previous horrible dining experience at Curly's the night before, I had high hopes for this place. And my hopes were not deflated. The service was fantastic. Timely delivery of drinks and food throughout the meal along with a server with a lot of personality added to the evening. We spent about $100 per person and it was money well spent. I had seared salmon with candied lavender pear chutney over smashed butternut squash completed with cracked pepper. The carrot cake for dessert was full of flavor and perfect for this time of year. Overall, with no strikes I plan on returning again the next time in town.

I was traveling on business and went here for dinner for dinner last night. I was the only person in the upstairs (restaurant) from 5 to 6:30 pm. French onion soup and salad were excellent. Can't say that for the rib eye steak. The first one came out gray and overcooked (I ordered it med-rare). The second steak was cooked closer to temperature but was still gray in color and had no taste. The mashed potatoes were good. Needless to say, I will take B&T off my list of places to dine when I'm in Green Bay.

Made reservations at Black and Tan for my girlfriends birthday, we were sat on time and greeted immediately! The menu has something for everyone and 3 of us chose the ribeye, the steaks tasted fantastic but were not tender and two of them were over cooked! The server was super attentive and really did make it special by not only offering the birthday girl dessert but by bringing another for the table to share! There was no need to make a reservation because the restaurant was virtually empty from 7 to 9 when we left. Wouldn't go back simply because of the quality of the steak for the price.

We were visiting Green Bay for our anniversary and went here for dinner. It is downtown in an older building, adds so much character! The bar at the entrance has great decor and is very relaxing where we had a drink before being seated. There is a fireplace and piano, with huge windows looking out into the street. We were taken to our table with a window view of the old downtown buildings. Since it was later in the evening, there were not a lot of people there, the lighting was perfect and romantic. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and wines, and was very sweet. The crab cakes appetizer we got was excellent as were our entrees. My husband got rack of lamb with this amazing jasmine rice. They have a bread basket they bring with about four different kinds of delicious, fresh bread. Because it was our anniversary, they gave us dessert on the house! I would most definitely recommend!

This used to be one of our favorite places to dine when in Green Bay but our last experience will be our last experience at this place. We took our family here on a Sunday night dinner. We skipped the lounge and headed up to the dining area. Our waitress was good. My daughters were surprised at the high prices for the dinners but we assured them that the food would be worth it. Our appetizers were very good as well as the fresh bread selection. When our dinners arrived our risotto on our salmon plate was cold on my plate as well as my daughters and we had to request a second dish of the risotto. My other daughter ordered the $40 lamb chop dinner. Her first bite was delicious but then it went down hill from there. There was more bone then there was meat. She was struggling to cut any meat off and requested a sharper knife. At that point I tried to cut the meat and felt like I was carving wood as I was constantly hitting more bone. When the waitress returned to check on us, I mentioned our dissatisfaction with the lamb chop dinner she said she would report it to the kitchen. We were offered one desert on the house for our troubles. Need I say more? Dinner for 4 with a bottle of champagne and tax was $190plus I did tip 20% as this was not the waitresses fault. There are better fine dining experiences out there for a lot less money.
